Tommy

Giving Maribel treats and brushing her was one thing, getting on her was a whole other. He was holding Maribel’s reins as they stood in the arena, waiting their turn at the mounting block. Edan’s horse was just standing relaxed in the same spot while Edan helped Elijah get in the saddle. He looked terrified when his horse first started walking but then he seemed to relax and there was a hint of a smile on his lips. Edan walked with them and led Elijah to the center of the arena where he got the horse stopped. Then Edan headed toward Tommy.

When he reached him, Edan signed, “Nervous?”

“No,” Tommy said but from Edan’s raised brow, he didn’t believe him one bit.

Edan wore a smile as he put a hand on Tommy’s chest. The look in his eyes told Tommy he’d be okay. He gave Edan a nod and together they walked to the mounting block. He let Edan take Maribel’s reins as he got up the steps. He put his hands on the saddle and his left foot in the stirrup, then pushed up and swung his leg over. Once in the saddle, he found the other stirrup with his foot and took a hold of the reins.

He looked down at Edan and the smile the man gave him made his heart skip a beat. Then that smile turned into a grin as Edan pulled something out of his back pocket. He handed it to Tommy who groaned when he saw what it was. A black cap with the Army seal and ‘US Army retired’ on it.

“Might as well have said ‘old,’” Tommy grumbled as he put it on.

Edan chuckled and gave Tommy two thumbs up before walking off.

Maribel seemed just fine with standing still, so Tommy let her and glanced around at the others. Elijah seemed to be doing just fine as he rode around the arena next to Grandpa Earl and his horse. Hallie was teaching Hawk how to steer and stop, and the man did not look like a happy camper. His horse looked half asleep while Hawk was stiff as a board.

Tommy glanced to his left when he felt someone there and found Edan on his horse.

“You remember?” Edan signed, then pointed at Maribel.

“We’re about to find out,” Tommy said and squeezed his heels against Maribel.

He nearly lost his balance when she moved forward but a hand on the saddle horn saved his ass from humiliation. He leaned back, trying to remember the lessons he and Elijah had been forced to endure by their mother. The only thing he’d liked about riding back then was when it went fast. Elijah hadn’t liked that part at all and when Tommy had taken a few falls resulting in Elijah crying on his behalf, their mother had reluctantly pulled them out of the lessons.

Edan showed him how to turn and stop by doing it himself and watching the man on a horse, so in control and confident, was both amazing and kinda sexy.
